An overdial algorithm normally waits for an agent to be free, then taking account of all campaign parameters, particularly the percentages of no answers and answering machines, it immediately reconsiders how many telephone numbers it should be dialing, and begins to dial further numbers as required. Often it may begin dialing at least several extra numbers. In doing this, it is balancing the twin objectives of keeping wait times to a minimum, while controlling the incidence of abandoned calls. This kind of algorithm is used by predictive and power dialers only, differently in each case.
Overdial and predial algorithms may be used in combination; see Combining Overdial and Predial, for how to do this in Oceanic®.
